One happy customer

"I have had a lot of gear over the years, I am 73 now and really picky about my hunting gear. The Ptarmigan 850 Down jacket is the best I have seen, and the fit is spot on. I made this purchase on the recommendation of Billy Molls. Always TRUST YOUR GUIDE! I"

Ptarmigan 850 Ultra Down

"I bought this on sale during the summertime. Seems like a well made product but until I have a chance to actually wear it through a Wisconsin winter I can not give a fair review of the product. I wish the company would understand this and stop asking me for a review."

Thomas L. (1/5)

Wicked Warm

"I got these because the other brand i mainly use was out of stock and they are the same weight and amount of down and yhey are wicked warm and will stand up well to glassing sheep in the Canadian rockies!"

JAMES O. (5/5)

An Outstanding Jacket!

"I have been a huge fan of down jackets for a long time, I must say that the Ptarmigan 850 jacket is by far my favorite. This jacket compresses down very small and fits easily into a day pack for scouting. I recently took it up on trip scouting new ground in a wilderness area at about 12000 feet, this jacket kept me very warm in the early mornings and late evenings. I can hardly wait to use it in truly cold weather."

David F. (5/5)

Great fall jacket

"Nothing wrong to say beside that I was expecting the jacket to have more insulation (for the price). Definitely not a winter puffy. Other than that very Confortable. Bought it mainly as a layer for cold temperature"

Daniel B. (4/5)

"Fits perfect. I am 5'6 175lbs. Fits like a medium with enough room for a hoodie and merino base layer. If you want to wear it as an outer layer then i would size up."

Kyle (5/5)

Haven’t had a chance to

"Haven’t had a chance to test it since it’s August, but the fit and feel are amazing. I hope to buy more colors when they come back in stock. Get one!"

George M. (5/5)

Excellent fit

"This is an excellent fit (5'10" 180lb), bought medium to layer underneath the hardscrabble and the kit is complete."

Vichy S. (5/5)

Ptarmigan 850 - Pre Season Review

"Sizing was true to Sizing Chart. Like the Ash Brown colour. Could easily be used as street wear. As always the quality of the garment is top drawer. Can’t wait to test it in the cold weather."

Q&A

If I wear a large normally do I need to size up to wear this over other layers or will the large fit over layering
That is a great question, Normally we do not recommend going up a size as our system is built for layering unless you plan to put bulky layer underneath. If you do have a sizing issue, we cover shipping back and forth until you get into the right size.
Where is this product made?
All SKRE gear is designed, tested, and field-proven here in the U.S. by our team and trusted hunters. We manufacture overseas so we can use the materials, factories, and technical processes required to build high-performance hunting gear—while still keeping pricing reasonable and quality extremely high. Every piece goes through strict quality control, and we back it with a lifetime warranty and hands-on customer service based here in the U.S. If something ever fails, we take care of it—no runaround. We fully respect the preference for U.S.-made gear, and we’re always evaluating opportunities to bring more production stateside as it makes sense. Our priority is building gear that performs in the field and standing behind it for life. Appreciate you asking and considering SKRE.
Will this material hold up to briars?
That’s a great question. This jacket is designed for packing in, layering, and staying warm during cold sits. Its main focus is being lightweight and highly insulated. Because of that, the exterior fabric isn’t built to handle heavy briars or brush.
How windproof is this jacket
Great question! The Ptarmigan Jacket is highly wind-resistant, designed to block the majority of wind while still allowing some breathability. It’s not 100% windproof like a hard shell, but the outer nylon fabric and high-fill down insulation create a strong barrier that keeps you warm even in harsh wind conditions. If you’re looking for full windproof protection, layering it under a soft shell like the Nebo or Hardscrabble Jacket works perfectly.
What denier thickness is the exterior shell fabric?
Thank you for your inquiry! The face fabric of our Ptarmigan Jacket and pants are 100% nylon. We do not measure by denier, we measure by GSM. The nylon face fabric of the Down Pant and Jacket is 48 GSM.
Is the slate gray color really just black? It’s hard to tell in the featured photos and customer photos but they all make it appear black, just wanted some clarity on that specific color. Thanks
It is very close to black but not a deep black. color.
What weight are the inner and outer materials of the jacket?
The weight will depend on the size. If we are using XL for example. The total weight of the down is 5.2 ounces. The total weight of the Jacket is roughly 16 ounces which would leave about 11 ounces of total external material weight.
Can you layer this under the guardian jacket?
Yes, almost every piece of our line up is built to be layered including the Ptarmigan Jacket. Our Ptarmigan Jacket is light and compactable enough to go under almost any other jacket we carry.

Is the ptarmigan 850 jacket and pants washable?
Yes, I would recommend hand washing the outside with a damp cloth if it is mild. If it is really dirty, you can wash with cold water on a gentle cycle and then hang dry or tumble dry with low to no heat. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
